Make Airlie Beach your mainland base
Airlie Beach is a mainland starting point for Whitsunday outings, with time on shore built around the lagoon, coastal paths and local activities. A boat trip, scenic flight and tandem jump each use the town differently. Start by choosing what to do, then match the departure point to your accommodation and arrival plans rather than treating every marina as the same place.
The lagoon is an artificial freshwater swimming facility beside the waterfront. It gives a different experience from Boathaven or Cannonvale Beach, where sea conditions matter. The Bicentennial Walkway connects the lagoon and Cannonvale along the coast, with views across Pioneer Bay. Leave room for this local side of the area instead of filling every gap with another departure.

Choose an Airlie Beach experience
For a beach and reef day, the speedboat includes lunch and snorkel gear. Choose a scenic flight for a window seat, or a shorter guided activity on land or water.

Whitehaven Beach day trips
The boat outing combines Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet with a guided national park walk, inner reef snorkelling and a beach lunch. Snorkelling equipment, a protective suit and local pickup are included in that programme. Drinks cost extra, and a surcharge applies on public days off in Queensland. For beach access and the lookout, continue with Whitehaven Beach tours. From 30 November to 4 December 2026, maintenance may temporarily affect parts of the Hill Inlet and Tongue Point platforms, boardwalks and toilets. At least one Hill Inlet lookout is expected to remain open.
Islands and sailing
Choose between a day away and a longer island journey before deciding how many nights to keep on the mainland. A departure from Airlie is only the start of the itinerary; the destination and time aboard shape the rest. The island overview and sailing advice are in the Whitsunday Islands guide.
Scenic flights from the Airlie area
The scenic flight with hotel transfer includes pilot commentary and a window seat. The other featured flight includes 60 minutes in the air, commentary and a courtesy bus from two Airlie locations. These are overflights rather than beach landings. Use the scenic flight guide to explore flight routes and outer reef options.

Local activities beyond a boat day
A tandem jump needs a larger time allowance than the freefall itself: allow up to four hours for the experience. The guided jet ski outing includes a safety briefing before departure and a life jacket, with arrival needed before the riding time. The hinterland bus excursion includes local commentary, a Conway Beach turtle habitat talk and coffee tasting. Wildlife encounters remain a matter of opportunity.
The tour overview helps separate these activities by format. For time ashore, use local sights and walks, or look at private outings when the group itself is central to the plan.
Good to know
Whitsunday Coast Airport near Proserpine, known as PPP, is different from Whitsunday Airport at Flametree. Hamilton Island Airport involves an onward ferry connection for Airlie. The PPP shuttle journey is approximately 40 minutes, with stops affecting the trip. Arrange the arrival route before attaching an activity to arrival day.
Choose an accommodation area with the actual departure point in mind. For swimming, follow local signs and current conditions. Queensland safety guidance reviewed on 5 November 2026 identifies year-round stinger risk; nets and protective suits do not provide complete protection. Keep the lagoon and sea beaches as separate planning decisions.
For accommodation, compare the walk or bus connection to your actual harbour rather than the distance to a general town marker. Cannonvale connects with Airlie by the coastal walkway and local buses, while individual accommodation addresses have different routes to departure points. Keep the meeting instructions with your travel details, particularly when one day starts at a marina and another involves a flight from a different airport.
Questions about Airlie Beach
Is this an independent guide?
This is an independent local travel guide, separate from tourism authorities and tour operators.
Can a scenic flight include beach time?
The featured scenic flights are overflights. Choose a boat or a package explicitly including a beach visit when time on the sand is the aim.
Which harbour should I go to?
Use the meeting point of the booked activity. Port of Airlie, Coral Sea Marina and Shute Harbour are distinct starts, and pickup arrangements belong to each product.
